Before Metroid (but after Underwurlde), we had a platform game exploring a maze of caverns and finding items. Samus didn't get a mole to help her, though.
The ultimate goal in Nodes of Yesod is to find eight keys (called 'alchiems') to access a room with a monolith, and the game ends when you make contact with it. The problem is that there are lots of alchiems of different colours, but only one colour is the correct one, which you will discover when you find the 'master' alchiem. To find them, you must explore a vast collection of underground rooms, with the help of a mole to dig through certain walls. All the while you have to avoid many enemies, and go quickly before your energy runs out. The 128K version adds some nice in-game music and a lot of neat voice samples, so is probably the preferred version.

The jumping can be very frustrating, in many cases requiring precise positioning, leading me to get fed up after my first playthrough. After watching a couple of longplays, however, and realising I could use the mole to clear out weaker enemies, I got a lot more interested in it. I might well have another shot at it, and I can see why the readers picked it, despite its superficial similarities to the earlier Underwurlde.
